Playas del Coco is one of the most popular destinations for travelers in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. If you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, here’s why Playas del Coco should be on your itinerary.

It’s easy to get to. There are a lot of beautiful destinations in Costa Rica…many of which are difficult to get to, especially if you don’t have a car. Playas del Coco is just thirty minutes from the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport airport in Liberia and five hours from the capital of San Jose. Buses and other transportation run frequently between both cities and Coco, making it one of the easier destinations to access. (See more info on how to get here from Liberia and San Jose.)

It’s a great starting point for other beautiful beaches. Playas del Coco is not home to the most beautiful beach in Costa Rica. However, it’s close to several. From Coco, you can explore many of Guanacaste’s more beautiful and popular beaches Playa Panama, Playa Conchal and Playa Bonita, among many others. No car? No worries. Many of the most beautiful beaches are boat-access only and there are plenty of tour operators in Coco willing to take you there.

It’s family-friendly. While Playas del Coco is a definite hotspot for retirees from the US and Canada, it also has a surprising amount of international families and family activities. The laid back vibe and many activities in the area make it a great Costa Rica family destination.

  • Tour Suggestions: Diamante Eco Adventure Park is one of the top family activities in Playas del Coco and Sea Bird Sailing Excursions is a very family-friendly boat. The Palo Verde River Boat tour is another great family tour. Save on both Diamante and Sea Bird when booked through Experience Coco.

But there’s still a nightlife. Despite not being one of the big party towns, Coco does have a decent amount of nightlife. The main draw is Zi Lounge, which has live music most nights of the week and a DJ after 9pm. Coconutz is another popular place to be and The Garden Bar is the new hot spot in Coco.

playas del Coco

Coco Beach is great for swimming. While not the most beautiful beach, Playas del Coc is great for swimming. Most of the year, the waters are calm with little to no waves, making it safe for even the little ones to swim. When the winds pick up, there can be some waves but nothing compared to the waves at the surfing beaches.

  •  Playa Ocotal is another great beach for swimming and can be reached in a taxi for just 3 mil. Ask the taxi driver to take you to Father Rooster restaurant.

You can visit nearly any destination in Guanacaste on a day trip from Playas del Coco. Want to explore other parts of Costa Rica on your trip? Playas del Coco is a great starting point for exploring the best parts of Guanacaste and surrounding areas. Popular destinations Arenal and Monteverde can both be visited on day trips, as well as other beautiful destinations like Rio Celeste and the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano.

Granada Nicaragua

Granada, Nicaragua

Nicaragua is just two hours away. Nicaragua is just hours from Coco – close enough to visit on a day trip. San Juan del Sur is the easiest town to get to but the colonial city of Granada and the Masaya Volcano are also possible on a day trip. Why explore one country when you can explore two?

  • Tour Suggestion – There is a wonderful daily tour from Playas del Coco to Nicaragua that includes the colonial city of Granada, Masaya volcano and market, and a boat tour of Lake Nicaragua. Email us (contact@experiencecoco.com) for more information on booking this tour.

It’s safe. Playas del Coco is an incredibly safe beach town. Crime, especially geared towards tourists, is very minimal. Opportunist theft is the biggest issue so be sure to keep your purse close by and never leave things unattended on the beach. Avoid walking the beach after dark as well. But, in general, you don’t need to be any more cautious in Coco than you would be in your own town.

There’s a little bit of everything. The #1 reason to visit Coco? There’s something for everyone here. Want to see a sloth in the wild? Or get an adrenaline rush on the longest ocean-view zipline? Maybe visit the famous Rio Celeste or catch a trophy fish? Dive with bull sharks or mantas? Playas del Coco is your destination!.

  • Tour Recommendations: There’s something in Coco for everyone. Send us an email (contact@experiencecoco.com) with your bucket list items and we’ll tell you the best tour options for you! We even have discounts for more of the most popular attractions.
